DESPITE MANY CANADIANS’ WISHES TO DIE AT HOME, 60 % DIE IN HOSPITAL

IT IS TIME FOR CHANGE

Demand far exceeds what Foothills Country Hospice can provide. Delivering excellence in specialized, compassionate end-of-life care at our current capacity isn’t enough.

More needs to be done.

Since January 2008, we have served more than 1,400 residents together with their loved ones; an estimated 6,500 people. Alberta’s population is growing rapidly, and with this, the demand for hospice care is increasing.

Annually, our residential hospice serves 100 rural, and South Calgary residents, and service demand extends beyond the walls of residential hospice care. Many who are impacted by end-of-life, loss, and grief need and are seeking support in their homes and communities.

Foothills Country Hospice is expanding from eight to 16 beds, creating a regional hub including outreach programming – the region’s leading specialist in end-of-life and bereavement care.

With Your Support We Will:

Grow our Care Facility

Expand to 16 beds, doubling our capacity to serve 200 or more residents and their loved ones annually.

Take Hospice into the Community

Provide community-based end-of-life supports and bereavement counseling that are integrated as part of daily well-being for people approaching end-of-life and those who support them.

–  Nav-CARE: A volunteer-run program focused on supporting people in living as well as possible through compassionate connection.

–  No One Dies Alone (NODA): Volunteer companionship and support for individuals who are expected to die within 48 to 72 hours.

–  Enhance Respite Support: Our vision is to explore the need for respite in the Foothills community and evolve our models to meet the needs of a large geographical area, giving families and caregivers an essential break.

Create Sustainability

Alberta Health Services (AHS) provides 57% of all operational funding for the current facility. AHS has agreed to continue this level of funding for the expanded 16 bed facility. All other funding for operations and programming must come from generous community support. Creating a solid endowment in support of FCHS is a significant step toward sustainability.

Join us as we will grow our facility, take hospice into the community, and create sustainability.

Foothills Country Hospice Goal
Our aspirational goal is that all community members impacted by death and dying have the connection and support they need to die and grieve well. By 2026, our intention is to:

  • serve more than 200 residents and their loved ones with expanded residential hospice care, and
  • substantially scale up outreach end-of-life supports to widen the circle of caring and provide much-needed support to patients facing serious illness and death, their loved ones, and caregivers.

Expansion Operational Funding Model

  • 16-bed hospice – AHS will fund 57% of operations – AHS funding does not cover all hospice-related costs, notably:
    • Staffing – administration assistants, maintenance, human resources, communications,
      fund development
    • Program costs – communications, fund development, insurance, food, utilities, housekeeping, volunteer
    • Community Outreach Programming
  • The incremental annual fundraising requirement is anticipated to be $1.8 million (up from $1.3 million). The FCHS Sustainability Endowment Fund is essential to long-term operational health.
